The Value And The Danger In Comments

When Can Comments Be Valuable?

The value of visitor generated content (or COMMENTS) to your website, in theory, is more information for a subject you’re tackling. Whether it adds depth, a related experience or even an argumentative opinion comments can maximize the impact of your site’s content for visitors. While there’s been some debate over whether or not comment activity can be correlated to a higher ranking page in the search engines, relevant content is undeniably valuable. And in a competitive environment for visibility & leads, any edge helps!

The Danger in Comments!

However, the fact is that MANY comments arrive on websites with an ulterior motive. The lion’s share of commenting out there is grossly tilted toward … ‘anything but relevant’. Regardless of the aforementioned value there are all kinds of folks out there trying to gain entry to your site, via comments, for the added links back to their own site. Why is it potentially harmful? The obvious answer is ‘would you ever allow worthless or even harmful content on your site where prospective clients are looking?’ The equally important answer is ‘bad back links can damage your competitive rank with search engines.’ The solution is comment moderation.

Video Quick Tip Instruction: Moderate Your Comments

A bad comment can be dressed up with compliments or whatever it may take to sneak a link in. Here’s a recent example found in our site’s moderation:

“Hi there, I found your web site by means of Google at the same time as looking for a similar subject, your site got here up, it looks great. I’ve added to favourites | added to bookmarks.”

It’s complimentary (at least), pleasant & seemingly harmless … isn’t it? Well, no it isn’t – it links to a bad site we’d never want to be affiliated with AND we caught it! SO ALWAYS CAREFULLY REVIEW ALL COMMENTS IN MODERATION, particularly the URL of the back link before taking anything public!
