In an ongoing effort to perfect their website quality ratings, Google has once again modified their guidelines that dictate the quality rating they assign to a website. Some of the modifications shouldn’t affect small to medium sized businesses (for instance, websites with dozens of text and visual ads may be penalized in Google’s latest quality rating factors, but most small to medium sized business don’t feature an overabundance of, if any, ads at all), but some updates, like attention to supplementary content, are worth taking note of.
Google wants to assign quality ratings to the websites they feel do the best job of giving the user the best possible experience. One of the ways they are determining if a user has a good experience on your site is through supplementary content that affects the amount of time a user spends on a site.
Supplementary content on your site draws users in and encourages them to click on links or photos on your site that are related to what they are interested in learning about. For example, a real estate agent may have a blog post about new listings of foreclosed homes in the area. Supplementary content for this page could be a link to another article on your site where users can read about tips for buying foreclosed homes. Engaging the reader and giving them more information than what they originally requested will keep them on your site longer, and Google will be paying attention to that.
In a recent article update by the SEMpost.com, it was explained that Google will decipher how much time a person spends on your website by whether or not users go and click another search result within a very short time span of visiting your site. The more quality supplementary content on your site, the more likely a user is to stick around.
You Need Good Content For Good SEO
You can’t have supplementary content, though, without having quality content to begin with. We’ve been talking about this for a long time- the importance of writing good, quality content on a regular basis. This includes the pages of your website- they should be well written, keyword optimized and include important local SEO elements like keyword optimized meta data, links to supplementary content, optimized images with alt text, H1 and H2 tags….etc.
Business owners are busy- and writing content on a weekly basis doesn’t always land on the ‘to do’ list. But it’s getting more and more evident that if you want Google to recognize your website and if you want to be found online, you absolutely can not get away with neglecting the content on your site. You must have a well written, optimized website and you have to blog on a regular basis.
